Child PsychiatryIf your child is having problems in school, at home, or with friends, and you think it might be due to a mental or emotional disturbance, it may be time to seek help from a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
Why do parents and families bring their child to a child and adolescent psychiatrist?Parents and family members often worry when their child seems to have a problem which is related to being sad, lonely, rebellious, inattentive, forgetful/disorganized, easily agitated or frustrated, or involved with the wrong crowd (i.e. peers who use drugs or have conduct problems). They may be concerned about their child’s development, eating or sleeping patterns, and how they are relating with family, friends, and other people at school, church, or other social circles. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist is specially qualified to understand the full range of factors related to emotional problems and mental disorders that can negatively impact children and teens. Who is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist?I am a physician who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders that cause problems with feeling, thinking, and behavior. I am specially trained and qualified to treat infants, children, teens, and adults as individuals, couples, families, and groups. What training does a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist have?A child and adolescent psychiatrist has 9 to 10 years of special training. Child psychiatric training requires 4 years of medical school, at least 3 years of approved residency training in medicine, neurology, and general psychiatry with adults, and 2 years of training in psychiatric work with children, adolescents, and their families in an accredited residency in child and adolescent psychiatry. The child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician licensed to practice medicine. See a list of my qualifications. What kind of treatment is provided? My treatment plan will take into account your child’s problems as well as the strengths that are identified in your child’s personality, talents/abilities, your family, the school, and other community resources. I review all aspects of your child’s situation and use a variety of treatment options to ensure that every need is being met. See a list of specific Patient Services that I provide. What if a medical problem is causing the symptoms? As a physician, I am qualified to take medical responsibility for the plan of psychiatric treatment and will consult with your child or teenager’s family physician to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
